Carpets are one of the composite materials that are currently not being recycled. Therefore, more than 90% of carpets find the end of their existence in the furnace, as they are burned when disposed of. In this workshop, we will approach this critical material and create new objects from it. The focus is on free experimentation with the material, its different components and properties.
Free attendance, register here.

Teilnahme kostenfrei, Anmeldung hier.

We are a “Do-it-yourself-and-together” group from Berlin, experimenting with tree fungi and what you can make out of them. Working with mycelial cultures has brought us together from art, design and natural science in the House of Materialization (Haus der Materialisierung). For the past year, we have been working under the title Remains of What Remains (Reste der Reste) to use fungi to grow new materials and art objects from wood waste. Participants can come by and get to know mushroom material with all their senses, build with mycelium plates or let self-designed objects grow from living cultures. Join this workshop for discussions about scientific and artistic perspectives on fungi and novel mycelial materials. Children and adults are equally welcome.
Free attendance, register here.

Collective play session with Monsters and Ghosts of the Far North
Andra Pop-Jurj, Lena Geerts Danau (Monsters and Ghosts of the Far North)
Friday, Nov 25 – 7-8pm

Age limit: none
Language: English

The collective play session will serve as a glimpse into the way in which our prototype Monsters and Ghosts of the Far North came about. Following a brief introduction into the topics that have shaped our research and experiments, participants are invited to immerse themselves into the interactive experience. As a guided interaction with our work and installation, this session is intended to reveal processes and decisions that have shaped our concept and visual language, as well as to facilitate conversations and exchanges among participants in an attempt to kindle a certain collective consciousness. Ultimately, the collective play session is an opportunity to engage with our research, methodology and the way in which we employ game engines and other software to simulate, test and analyse existing and emerging relations between species, spaces and environmental phenomena.

Symbiotic AI: Simulating AI Entanglement Through Collective Storytelling
Xiaoyu Iris Qu (曲晓宇) (Do AIs Dream of Climate Chaos) and Chao Hui Tu
Friday, Nov 25 – 7:30-10pm

Age limit: from 14 years
Language: English

The tech industry increasingly relies on artificial intelligence for climate change solutions. Though most AI systems manifest as software machine learning algorithms, they depend on a ubiquitous hardware infrastructure to exist. Given sufficient data, how would an AI compute its existence? Symbiosis.AI came from a year-long project consisting of a role-play workshop and a simulated environment. In this fictional scenario, a weather forecast artificial intelligence forms symbiotic relationships with the ecosystem to survive climate change. During the workshop, participants will take on roles of the AI and six other species, and together we’ll build a world to believe in.

This workshop deals with bringing together complex concepts with one of the most popular everyday phenomena: TikTok. How do you convey the effects of global warming, energy cycles, and technology-driven disruption in a short and snappy way? The social media platform TikTok has long been home not only to dance tutorials, but also to educational content, different perspectives from diverse communities, and well-researched explainer videos. TikTok is all about discovery: this workshop will help to better understand how the app works and to develop strategies for thinking about TikTok as a new platform for digital knowledge transfer. Together with artists and scientists we want to experiment with visual storytelling in this workshop.
Notes: Participants need a smartphone and headphones and the willingness to install TikTok.
Free attendance, register here.

In the development of desirable urban systems, regionality and local production are increasingly important, both for design objects and culinary experiences. Centuries-old techniques such as sourdough, beer brewing, and kombucha use microorganisms to make or preserve food. In recent years, these practices have regained importance in our society. In this workshop, we will look at the coming together of beings, cultures and techniques. Together, this bubbling fermentation, mixing, and agitation creates new ideas, discussions, and knowledge. Join us in celebrating this sensational approach to preservation, reconnecting with regional and seasonal vegetables, and discovering myriad culinary possibilities. It’s easier than you think!

What Color is Wedding?  //  Welche Farbe hat der Wedding?
Elena Sofia Stranges, Inês Abreu (Ort-Schafft-Material)
Saturday, Nov 26 – 3:30-5:00pm / Samstag, 26. November – 15:30-17:00 Uhr

Age limit: none / Altersbegrenzung: keine
Language: German / Sprache: Deutsch

Together and using all our senses, we want to explore the neighborhood in Wedding: what can we find in the ground, in the plants, between the houses? What of it can be used, and how?
We will discover the resources and possibilities of the nature of abandonment, of overlooking, of the spontaneous. From here, something new will emerge. During a walk, we will conduct a creative mapping of the neighborhood, and gather and share information, as well as planting and coloring materials. In the workshop we will experiment in a free way with colors from collected plants. We want to paint together with you a portrait of Wedding in all colors, with only minimal resources.
Free attendance, register here.

Teilnahme kostenfrei, Anmeldung hier.

Hyeseon Jeong, Seongmin Yuk (The Backpack of Wings: Modern Mythology)
Saturday, Nov 26 – 6:30-9:30pm

Age limit: from 15 years
Language: English

This workshop invites participants to a collective exercise of imaginary storytelling, by looking into GPS data from migratory birds. Birds’ geographical information tells us not only about their biological behavior, but also reveals its correlation with human activities. The workshop attempts to open up a possibility of using bio-geo tracking technology as a tool for communion, beyond the level of understanding the species. Focusing on the migration route of a white stork named Jonas, an exercise of collective imagining allows participants to embody the bird and speculate on the bird’s multisensorial perceptions throughout its journey: what the bird may have seen, heard, smelled, or felt. The stories are then collected and connected together.  Note: Participants need to bring their own earphones (+ adapters for iphone if necessary).
Free attendance, register here.

Sunday, Nov 27 – 1:30-2:30pm

Age limit: none

What makes silent green the place that it is? Who is involved in maintaining this environment? Who inhabits it, who visits and how does the interaction between these different actors influence the site’s development over time? In this workshop we ask participants to investigate one of these actors and see how they relate to each other. By building a network of interdependence, together we will form a better understanding of the history and future of this venue.
Establishing this little piece of a larger ensemble reveals a major challenge: how do we think in ecological terms? The network created with nine to twelve actors stretches far beyond silent green and takes us underground, up into the air, out across the city and into the wider world.
Free attendance, register here.

Germany is one of the largest paper-consuming countries in the world – 240 kg per person per year. Even in our present day, paper consumption is rising, through the increasing amount of online shopping in pandemic times. These bleak statistics are concerning, as global paper consumption is directly connected to deforestation and the impact of climate change. Old papers and cardboard can be used to make arty-recycling papers. In this workshop, you can experience the transformative process of making yourself new paper from paper trash. Guided by pedagogues and activists from Kulturlabor Trial&Error e.V., the workshop includes experiments with colors as well as the making of art paper with seeds, leaves and flowers.
Free attendance, register here.
